The 'global climate regulation ecosystem account' is a method of accounting for the role of ecosystems in regulating the Earth's climate.
Climate regulation is one of the critical ecosystem services provided by natural ecosystems, including forests, wetlands, grasslands and other habitats. The account aims to quantify and track the contributions of various ecosystems to climate regulation, and includes carbon sequestration (the yearly uptake of carbon dioxide) and carbon retention (the stock of carbon dioxide stored in the ecosystems).
